California
Art Education: BFA from Laguna College of Art + Design in Laguna Beach, CA. After graduation I attended workshops with artists Sean Cheetham, Michael Obermeyer, and Warren Chang, to name a few.
Style: Realism with influences of impressionism and tonalism.
Creative Spark: The transcendent experience of the natural world, and capturing the mood or atmosphere in a painting. In plein-air painting, it is depicting atmospheric perspective or the hazy coastal air. In nocturnes, it is sensing and communicating the mood that may be present and the luminous glow of lights in the night.
Second-Choice Career: Working at a metal shop doing fabrication for railings, gates, and similar things.
Other Passions: Surfing. And I have a lot of other hobbies and interests that arose out of skills related to my main passions of painting and sculpting, including building frames, woodworking, lost-wax casting, welding, blacksmithing, and knife-making.
Best Advice Received: A career in fine art is a marathon, not a sprint.
Pet Peeve: Driving around looking for a spot to plein-air paint and not being able to settle on a location.
Favorite Studio Music: Podcasts, usually a long-format conversation of a serious sort. I also listen to music I enjoyed as a teenager and occasionally Miles Davis or Chopin.
Price Range: $250 to $3,500.
