Richie Carter
Montana
Art Education: Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Montana after studying in San Diego, France, and Italy. I was also fortunate to study briefly with John Poon.
Creative Spark: I have found that while driving in my car I am consistently sparked by the mixture of landscapes with the seemingly inevitable human elements.
Second-Choice Career: Hands down I would choose to be a professional surfer or possibly a Michelin-starred chef. I’m assuming the talent comes along with the wish.
Other Passions: If it involves a healthy dose of competition or fear, I usually enjoy it: playing pool, rock climbing, skiing, volleyball, golf, and playing music.
One Thing People Don’t Know About You: I am a huge fan of Garth Brooks.
Best Advice Received: You must tell your story somehow.
Biggest Fear: It sounds strange, but I think I am most afraid of myself.
Pet Peeve: Bugs getting into my plein-air paintings.
Quirkiest Trait: I have a history of falling asleep during painting excursions.
Mantra or Motto: Clean palette, clean mind.
Favorite Studio Music: Occasionally I listen to something other than Gregory Alan Isakov.
Favorite Work by Another Artist: I was just introduced to Nicolas Martin. He’s doing some amazing work. Also, recently seeing John Singer Sargent’s painting CARNATION, LILY, LILY, ROSE blew me away.
Future Goals: Build my own house and studio complete with a wood-fired sauna.
Price Range: $150 to $8,500.
Representation: Montana Gallery, Billings, MT; Persimmon Gallery, Bigfork, MT; Frame of Reference Fine Art, Whitefish, MT; Sundog Fine Art, Bozeman, MT.
