Approximately 140 works of art from female artists throughout the country and beyond is on display this winter in the Women Artists of the West’s 52nd National Exhibition at McBride Gallery in Annapolis, MD. Titled East Meets West, this highly competitive juried exhibition showcases the best of the group’s artwork from both coasts and everywhere in between, as well as internationally. The exhibition highlights the common ground and shared interests among members, regardless of location.

Exhibition-goers and collectors have access to more than seven charming and fully furnished rooms at Cynthia McBride’s historic gallery featuring the exhibition landscapes, seascapes, figurative work, still lifes, wildlife, sculptures, and more.

Burneta Venosdel, WAOW organization president and longtime exhibiting member, believes attendees of this year’s event have a museum-level art experience awaiting them. “Don’t let the name of our organization fool you,” she says. “We are a diverse group of women artists from across the country, Canada, and across the pond in Australia who are embracing realistic, impressionistic, contemporary, and representational styles. Expect to see work of outstanding quality in various genres, subject matter, and media.”

WAOW was founded in 1971 and currently boasts a membership of 300 professional women painters and sculptors. This year 118 members were juried into the annual exhibition, including national-award winners Paula B. Holtzclaw, Mary Ann Cherry, Cheryl Harley-Volz, Deanne McKeown, Mejo Okon, Mary Lou Pape, Heather Arenas, and Jane Hunt, as well as newcomers Vanessa Rusczyk and Margaret Drake.

An exhibition catalog featuring one work from each exhibiting artist, and a statement in her words of the story behind that work, is available for purchase in print or digital format through the organization’s website. —Allison Malafronte
