Manitou Auctions, a division of Manitou Galleries, presents the 11th annual Auction in Santa Fe this month at the Hilton Santa Fe in the Mesa Ballroom. The auction boasts 270 fine-art works, nearly 400 Native American artifacts, and sundry Old West collectibles. Eager collectors can get a first look at the abundant trove starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday, August 7. Additional previews are offered at 9 a.m. on August 8 and 9, and the auction kicks off at 1 p.m. both days. Absentee, telephone, and Internet bidding options are also available.
“We have something for everyone, including new buyers and serious collectors,” says Charla Nelson, who owns Manitou Galleries in Santa Fe and in Cheyenne, WY, with her husband, Bob. The value range is between $500 and $50,000, she adds. “This year the sale features more collections, some of which came from anonymous sources, others from families who would like their names to be known.”
Among the auction’s 700 lots are notable items from the private collection of western art collector Gary Likkel, including an oil painting by Lyle Tayson Sr. valued between $2,500 and $3,500. Items from the private collection of Don and Dorothy Hoff present a mix of western and southwestern art, including oil paintings by Buck McCain, Walt Gonske, and R.S. Riddick, which range in value from $2,000 to $9,000. The auction’s fine-art reserve also includes highly collectible works by contemporary western painters Ed Mell, G. Harvey, Billy Schenck, Len Chmiel, and Howard Post, as well as works by early 20th-century New Mexico artists Leon Gaspard, Jozef Bakos, and Ernest Blumenschein, founding member of the Taos Society of Artists. An oil painting by William Robinson Leigh, considered to have been one of the most prolific painters of the West, is projected to fetch between $10,000 and $15,000. Also for sale are drawings, prints, and sculptures, including three bronze Indian warrior figures by award-winning sculptor Michael Westergard.
Auction goers can also find treasures among a fascinating collection of Indian vests, toys, basketry, pottery, beadwork, bows and quivers, rare parfleche containers, and some 70 Navajo weavings, including a room-sized Yei weaving valued between $8,000 and $12,000. —Kim Agricola
