Husband-and-wife artists John and Terri Kelly Moyers share a life as well as a love for the Southwest. This month Nedra Matteucci Galleries features 35 new, original works by the award-winning painters. The show opens with a reception on Saturday, August 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. Gallery owner Nedra Matteucci notes enthusiastically that in June, Terri received the Buyer’s Choice award at the annual Prix de West Invitational show at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, OK. “The consistent accolades they receive from patrons and peers alike are testament to the fine quality and excellence we know and love in their paintings,” Matteucci says of the artistic duo. “This exhibition achieves this and more. While both artists continue to refine their techniques, John presents bold Native American compositions with a modernist color sensibility, and Terri builds on Mexican figurative themes with increasing character and brilliant use of color.”

Viewers who attend the show can expect to see small plein-air works depicting a range of southwestern locations as well as larger figurative pieces that reflect the region’s rich cultural heritage. Each artist has distinctive interests. One of Terri’s favorite subjects is the American cowgirl, often overlooked in history books and stories about the West. But whether she is painting a portrait of a modern-day cowgirl in blue jeans, an adobe structure in the snow, or a young woman in traditional Mexican attire, the subjects are always ones that capture her eye because of their beauty.

Both artists include scenes of the Canadian Rockies and its rugged terrain in their body of works; they first met years ago at a painting workshop with artist Robert Lougheed in British Columbia. John counts American Indians, cowboys, landscapes, and themes from Mexico and New Mexico among his favorite subject matter. He is known for representing colors and values with precision and also for using authentic props, which imbues his work with historical accuracy. John is a member of the Cowboy Artists of America; in 2015 Terri was inducted into the Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, TX. —Bonnie Gangelhoff
