The Legacy Gallery, Santa Fe, NM
July 2
Situated in the foothills of New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains is Canyon Road, a welcoming half-mile stretch in the Historic District of Santa Fe. The famous area offers old-world southwestern charm and more than 100 galleries, jewelry stores, clothing boutiques, home furnishing shops, artists’ studios, and gourmet restaurants. Now The Legacy Gallery, of Scottsdale, AZ, proudly extends its western art gallery footprint onto the scene, as it makes its official debut on Canyon Road on Independence Day weekend.
Since founding The Legacy Gallery in 1988, owners Brad and Jinger Richardson have been interested in bringing their expertise to the Santa Fe art market. In September 2021, the city’s well-known Manitou Galleries, owned by Bob and Charla Nelson for more than two decades, officially became part of the Legacy family.
Under The Legacy Gallery ownership, Manitou’s 225 Canyon Road location becomes The Legacy Gallery, managed by associate director Cyndi Hall. It joins the Scottsdale flagship in offering a traditional aesthetic of representational and impressionistic paintings and sculptures in a wide variety of subject matter, including western, figurative, wildlife, still life, and landscape. Meanwhile, the 123 West Palace Avenue location continues as Manitou Galleries, managed by Hall. Also continuing on-site is Palace Jewelers, managed by Tsali Hall. The gallery showcases western contemporary art in a variety of genres and media, as well as Native American fine jewelry. The Scottsdale gallery recently hosted a Palace Jewelers trunk show in March, extending the Arizona site’s collectible offerings.
The Canyon Road grand opening takes place on Saturday, July 2. To celebrate with its family of artists and clients, the gallery hosts a full day of fun events, including artists’ talks, demonstrations, refreshments, music, and more in the newly renovated space. The show and sale features works by Bill Anton, Arturo Chávez, John Coleman, Martin Grelle, Jerry Jordan, Z.S. Liang, David Mann, Kyle Polzin, Paul Rhymer, Ray Roberts, Matt Smith, Kim Wiggins, and Jeremy Winborg, among many others. “Because our artists are so popular, we don’t have stockpiles of their work, so a lot of what’s available in the sale are new, never-before-seen works,” Hall says.
Besides the opportunity to check out the new artworks and mingle, the open-house atmosphere offers the chance to experience the remodeled venue. “The space has gotten a complete facelift and very much mirrors our gallery in Scottsdale,” Hall continues, “including completely new wall treatments and refinished flooring. It’s been an exciting labor of love—and one that we can’t wait to share.”
If you can’t make it to Santa Fe over the summer holiday weekend, you’ve still got plenty of other opportunities. The Legacy Gallery and Manitou Galleries are open every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas. —Beth Williams
