Center for the Arts, Jackson, WY
September 16-17
The Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival, held for two weeks every September, is widely recognized as a premier cultural event in the Rocky Mountain West. One of its signature components is the highly anticipated Jackson Hole Art Auction.
Auction partners Trailside Galleries and Gerald Peters Gallery bring more than 100 years of combined experience and expertise to the event. Now in its 16th year, the auction is known for its high standard of works in a variety of genres, including wildlife, sporting, figurative, landscape, and western art by past masters and contemporary artists.
“The great thing about our auction is the variety, content, and price point,” says Kevin Doyle, the auction’s managing director and partner. He joined the organization in October 2021 after more than two decades at Sotheby’s. Doyle, himself an auctioneer, appreciates the auction’s wide appeal. “Whether you’re just building a new collection, or you just bought a house and you’d like to put art on the walls, it’s a great place to start,” he says. “For trophy hunters and seasoned collectors, there are works such as Clymer, Kuhn, Gollings, and Rungius that are very much at home here in Jackson and elsewhere.”
Hundreds of lots are available over the two-day event held at the Center for the Arts, with sales beginning at noon on Friday and Saturday. Doyle cites REGISTER ROCK, IDAHO as an “important” Frederic Remington oil and highlights G. Harvey’s THE SIDEWALK CAFÉ “because his market has been so strong lately,” he says. Another notable is a Howard Terpning 1996 masterwork that has been in one collection and never before offered at auction. “It has all the elements of a great Terpning, including large Native American figures and compelling subject matter,” Doyle continues. “The title, AWAITING THE SIGNAL, tells the story of what’s to come.”
Building on the auction’s success in the sales of western and wildlife art, Doyle adds, “I see great potential in expanding the Jackson Hole Art Auction into other collecting categories, be it luxury goods, furniture, decorative arts, or Native American art, to name a few.”
A preview is on display at the 130 East Broadway showroom, and the catalog is available online at the end of August. Live auction streaming is offered on the event’s web platform, www.invaluable.com, and www.liveauctioneers.com. —Beth Williams
