This month Greenhouse Gallery in San Antonio, TX, celebrates its 31st anniversary with a group show of gallery and guest artists that opens on February 5. This is the one show of the year in which all of the gallery’s artists are invited to exhibit works. An artists’ reception is on Friday, February 8, from 5 to 8 p.m.
Gallery owners Jim Janes and Mark Smith say the anniversary exhibit was conceived in conjunction with the gallery’s grand opening when it relocated to a new space in 2005. Historically, February had been a slow month for shows at the gallery, but the grand opening turned the anniversary show into one of the gallery’s most important shows of the year. This year several gallery artists, including western painter Andy Thomas, will be unveiling major new works.
Artist Brent Jensen is contributing five new oil paintings to the show, including PIPE ESSENTIALS, which depicts his grandfather’s tobacco can and Jensen’s own antique pipe collection. His other work includes two scenes of Paris, a seascape of Laguna Beach, and a painting of the San Francisco de Asis Mission Church in Taos, NM, made famous by Georgia O’Keeffe.
Australia-based artist John McCartin presents four new paintings at this year’s event. “THE RESTLESS TIDE is a subject that fascinates me,” McCartin says, “particularly the play of late-afternoon light on the snowlike foam of the incoming tide. The scene was in Victor Harbor on the South Australia coast, about 45 minutes from our home in the Adelaide Hills. My wife and I often travel there for the day or a weekend.” The artist says that his works for this show, while similar in theme to his past works, are simpler and stronger in design while providing greater visual impact.
As this issue was going to press, the gallery had not yet confirmed all of the artists participating in the show, but in past years it has included about 115 new works from 35 gallery and guest artists. A few of the confirmed participants are Kathy Anderson, Gavin Glakas, Gregory Packard, Sherry Salari Sander, Kathryn Stats, and guest artist William J. Kalwick Jr. —Laura Rintala
