From August 31 through October 31, Earthwood Gallery hosts its third annual Women of the West show, featuring more than 75 new works by nine western women painters. A public opening reception is on Friday, September 7, from 6 to 9 p.m., during which Director’s Choice, Artists’ Choice, and People’s Choice awards are presented.

“This year’s show is extra-special because we added a new fundraising event for the Emergency Family Assistance Association of Boulder County,” says gallery co-owner Ron Wilcocks. The artists in the show donate paintings for auction at this invitation-only event, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the EFAA, a nonprofit organization that provides support to families, people with disabilities, and seniors struggling to meet their basic needs. Earthwood Gallery is also donating a portion of the proceeds from the entire show to the EFAA.

The show includes both studio and plein-air works representing the diverse landscapes of the West, depicting everything from seascapes to alpine meadows and from rural to urban scenes. A paint-out takes place during the morning of Thursday, September 6, on the historic Pearl Street pedestrian mall in downtown Boulder. Many artists featured in the show are avid plein-air painters and may be producing fresh pieces on location while in Boulder.

“I’m a big fan of plein-air painting,” says Margaret Jensen, a participating artist based in Estes Park, CO. “It has taught me to be discerning, to know why I want to paint a subject. I welcome in the scene and then give it my complete focus, action, and passion.”

Heather Coen, another Colorado-
based artist in the show, has recently shifted to painting predominately en plein air. “I’m in love with the Rocky Mountains, the rivers, the streams, and misty peaks,” Coen says. “I often take my plein-air kit and head off without a destination in mind. [Then I try] to capture what draws me to a certain scene … I want the viewer to see the earth, animals, and people through my eyes—to feel the emotions that majesty, color, and beauty evoke.”

Works by Cindy Carrillo, Coni Grant, Dawn Normali, Maggie Renner Hellmann, Sarah Rogers, Terri Sanchez, and Yelena Sidorova are also featured in the show.
