For two full days beginning on Saturday, May 18, the heart of historic Beverly Gardens Park transforms into a bustling outdoor art show and sale featuring paintings, sculptures, photographs, ceramics, and an array of other traditional and contemporary artworks and fine crafts. Hailing from California, the Southwest, and beyond, 250 juried artists display their creations at individual booths situated throughout a four-block area along Santa Monica Boulevard. “We have a range of artists who are all over the map with their styles,” says show coordinator Karen McLean. “They are asked to create a gallerylike setting within their spaces, and the number of works they bring is based on what they can display within that space.”
The 46th annual show pays special tribute to the recent completion of a multiyear renovation project designed to restore several areas of century-old Beverly Gardens and make it more “water wise,” says McLean. “The park is a recognized historic site,” she adds, noting that the 23-block park features a cactus garden, a lily pond, and a palm garden, among other distinctive gardens. “So that’s part of the reason why we are featuring a garden-party theme this year,” she says. In a nod to the park’s vibrant botanical life and the recent renovations, a variety of artists showcase garden-focused works, from traditional landscape paintings and floral still lifes to three-dimensional, mixed-media representations of garden settings. Santa Fe, NM, artisans Barbara Woods and H. Tom Thomas, for example, work collaboratively to create plant-inspired sconce lamps and lanterns using materials like hardwood, glass, and painted silk.
Also among the group are popular returning participants like landscape painter Taman Vanscoy of Long Beach, CA, who works in watercolor and mixed media. “Taman creates evocative work and has a unique way with landscapes—his work is dreamlike,” says McLean, adding, “You can’t exactly tell where his landscapes are.” Throughout the weekend, visitors can also watch bold and lively painters like Carol Steinberg in action as they capture their lush garden surroundings en plein air. Presented by the City of Beverly Hills Community Services Department, the show is open to the public with free admission. The event always draws a large crowd, including Southern Californians and tourists alike, notes McLean. “It’s a fun spring weekend,” she says. —Kim Agricola
