Every year the Art Renewal Center—a nonprofit foundation that champions the revival of realism in the visual arts—sponsors a major international art competition. This year the 15th annual ARC Salon garnered almost 5,000 entries from 83 countries, and 103 of the artworks that were selected as winners and finalists are on view in an exhibition at Sotheby’s in New York City this summer. The exhibition travels to the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona in October.
Of the 103 exhibition artworks—including drawings, paintings, and sculpture—28 are set to be auctioned by Sotheby’s online, while dozens of others are available for purchase through ARC. A public grand opening is planned for Saturday, July 17, at Sotheby’s. “We anticipate that this public sale of 28 of the finest works from the 2021 ARC Salon hosted by Sotheby’s will be the first of many,” says ARC’s co-chair and COO Kara Ross. “We are certain that this important auction will drive prices for these masterful works even higher. Anyone who loves or currently collects representational art should be motivated to participate in this auction.”
Numerous awards were presented in this year’s competition, including those selected by ARC’s jury and staff as well as those bestowed by museums, publications, and other event sponsors. Virginia artist Rob Liberace won Best of Show, Evgeniy Monahov of Russia won the prestigious William Bouguereau Award, and David Gomez of Colombia won the People’s Choice Award. Among the other top winners are Duffy Sheridan, Zhaoming Wu, Gavin Glakas, D. Eleinne Basa, Tibor Nagy, Kyle Ma, and Cathy Sheeter. Daud Akhriev’s painting SHIFT CHANGE won the Southwest Art Magazine Award. The painting, which depicts fishermen in a Moroccan village called Essaouira, displays a remarkable mastery of design, pattern, and color.
The Art Renewal Center is again excited to collaborate with Fashion Week San Diego; FWSD designers will create original couture outfits inspired by nine award-winning Salon artworks, including a still life by Jeremy Goodding and an interior scene by Jim McVicker. These one-of-a-kind garments are displayed alongside the respective artworks at Sotheby’s on July 24. –Allison Malafronte
