“I FOUND I COULD SAY THINGS WITH COLOR AND SHAPES THAT I COULDN’T SAY ANY OTHER WAY—THINGS I HAD NO WORDS FOR,” Georgia O’Keeffe once said. Through her iconic paintings, O’Keeffe became a seminal American artist of her time. Other influential artists like Mary Cassatt, Hilma af Klint, and Frida Kahlo also helped to create an enduring legacy that women artists enthusiastically carry on today. Fortunately, women in art are finally beginning to receive the recognition they deserve. To celebrate this progress, we present a sampling of gifted contemporary female artists who work in a variety of mediums and genres.
