ABOUT A DECADE AGO, photographer Jenny Gummersall and her family set out from their home in Los Angeles for an extended 15-month road trip. It wasn’t exactly a vacation. Gummersall and her husband, Greg, who’s a painter, and their young son were on a mission to find a new place to call home. After six years in L.A., they longed to escape “the general craziness—the riots, fast pace, floods, wildfires, and earthquakes,” the photographer recalls.
The family’s odyssey first took them north along the Pacific Coast as far as Whidbey Island, north of Seattle, WA. “We wanted somewhere that felt right. We would know it when we saw it,” Gummersall says. They continued their journey inland, eventually rolling through small towns across Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado…
