21 Over 31 | Ranjini Venkatachari

By Bonnie Gangelhoff

ART EDUCATION: Self-taught.
STYLE: My style is realistic. I like to use everyday subjects, expressive color, and dramatic lighting. I’m not a photorealist because I see art as passionate interpretation.
MOST INTERESTING THING ABOUT THE WAY YOU WORK: I always have my digital camera and pencils with me, so when I see something, I can start sketching for a piece later. If I am in an airport and held over for a few hours, I can be sketching.
SECOND-CHOICE CAREER: Architect.
BEST ADVICE RECEIVED: Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s about learning to dance in the rain.
CREATIVE SPARK: Shop windows can grab my attention. I will then go to an antiques shop or thrift store to get props for a set-up.
PRICE RANGE: $100 to $2,000. My work ranges from card size to as large as 24 by 36 inches.
GALLERIES: Semantics Gallery, Edmonds, WA; Kaewyn Gallery, Bothell, WA; www.vividpencils.com.
