BORN: New Albany, IN.
ART EDUCATION: Bachelor of fine arts from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC.
STYLE: Dreamscape painting.
MOST INTERESTING THING ABOUT THE WAY YOU WORK: “I tend to let my paintings take on a direction of their own, and I look to other pieces I am working on, or ones that are finished and that I like, for clues as to what steps to take.”
FIRST ART SALE: “A piece I had in a show at Percolator Coffee House in Greenville, NC.”
SECOND-CHOICE CAREER: Librarian or fashion designer.
OTHER PASSIONS: Gardening, cooking, photography, and reading novels or artists’ biographies.
MANTRA OR MOTTO: “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!”
FAVORITE STUDIO MUSIC: “Some of my favorites lately are Devendra Banhart, Deerhoof, The Velvet Underground, and Bjork.”
BEST ADVICE RECEIVED: “Paul Hartley, one of my professors at ECU, taught me to ‘edit’ my paintings, which often meant repainting parts in order to make other areas click. This really helped me open up and not get attached to certain areas at the cost of the entire composition.”
PET PEEVE: “When little hairs from my cat get in my paintings. Sometimes I have to get tweezers to pick them out.”
FAVORITE ARTWORK BY ANOTHER ARTIST: Max Ernst’s ZOOMORPHIC COUPLE. “I saw this painting in Venice many years ago and it made me cry. It exuded this intense emotion that I will never forget.”
PRICE RANGE: $200 to $3,000.
NEXT BIG GOAL: “I would like to show in a gallery in another state or country.”
CREATIVE SPARK: Traveling. “I always try to see art shows wherever I go.”
GALLERIES: Mountain Shadow Gallery, Tucson, AZ; www.kristylynn.net.
