Excerpted from Art Journey America: Landscapes.
Dennis Liberty’s love and respect for the colorful Sandia Mountains near his home just outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico, comes through in the extensive series of paintings he’s presently creating. “I plan 101 paintings of these mountains with which I’ve lived for over 40 years,” says Liberty. “It has taken me that long to get up the guts to paint them.”
What inspired this painting?
Exploration of color is my primary activity, my eternal fascination. The Sandias provide the perfect subject to hang color on. The north end of the mountain in RAIN DANCE gives me color challenges on the land, the mountain and in the sky.
How would you describe your painting style?
My paintings are representational. I want viewers to be invited into the image and I want them to then explore the structure and color. I spend months painting a work like RAIN DANCE. I hope the viewer can spend years looking at it and constantly discover something new.
