Laguna Beach, CA | Some of the country’s finest plein-air painters travel to Laguna Beach this month to participate in the 12th Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational. The event is hosted by the Laguna Art Museum and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and takes place October 10-17.
The event has a number of highlights throughout the week. On Sunday, October 10, the 50 participating artists create 8-by-10-inch study paintings that are available for sale at $300 each for the Trust Your Plein Sight feature. Buyers must trust their instincts, because the artists’ names are not revealed until after the purchase. Beginning Monday morning, October 11, the artists paint throughout the Laguna Beach area. The public is encouraged to observe the painters as they work.
At 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 16, a Quick Draw is held at Heisler Park; artists have only two hours to complete a work of art while being watched by hundreds of onlookers. Saturday evening at 6 p.m., each artist selects three of his or her paintings created over the week to be offered at the Collector’s Soirée and Sale at the museum. Lastly, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, a public art show and sale is held.
The invitational hosts many respected artists from all over the United States. Roger Dale Brown hails from Tennessee and travels coast-to-coast to paint the country’s beautiful scenery. Larry Cannon is a self-taught California watercolor painter who focuses primarily on the landscapes and seascapes of Northern California.
W. Jason Situ spent the first 40 years of his life living and painting in China until he immigrated to the United States with his family in 1989. He has been a full-time plein-air artist since 1997. Julia Seelos is a full-time artist from the San Francisco Bay Area devoted to plein-air painting. She travels up and down California, painting oceans and forests, rural scenes of farms, and picturesque homes and missions.
Camille Przewodek is an impressionist painter who is drawn to the landscapes of Europe as well as the gardens, vineyards, and shores that surround her home in Petaluma, CA. Jeff Sewell was born and raised in Newport Beach, CA, and has lived in Orange County for over 38 years. He expresses this deep connection to the area through his plein-air paintings of seascapes and beach scenes. Jim Wodark began his career as a cartoonist until he moved to California and began to explore the plein-air technique. He discovered oil paint as his medium of choice and has dedicated himself to art for the last 24 years.
Look forward to seeing these artists, along with many others, in action during the 12th Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational. For more information: 949.376.3635 or www.lpapa.org.
