In 1991, a small group of artists joined forces to found the National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society. Their mission was to introduce an annual juried art exhibition that would not only encourage the art of oil and acrylic painting, but add to the cultural enrichment and awareness of artistic talent in North America. And so the Best of America Art Exhibition was born. The 26th annual exhibit opens on September 3 at Addison Art Gallery in the seaside town of Orleans, MA, with a reception at 5 p.m.

“In the past, the exhibit took place mainly in the central United States,” says Hebe Brooks, NOAPS publicity director. “This year we are venturing to the East Coast to the beautiful Cape Cod area. Nevertheless, the exhibit includes many artists from California and western Canada.” The juried art show and sale highlights the works of 104 artists, including wildlife artist Cindy Sorley-Keichinger, equine and wildlife artist Brenda Morgan, and landscape and seascape painter Rosemarie Armstrong. Works were selected out of more than 850 entries from NOAPS members. “These are some of the most talented artists working in oil and acrylic media,” says Brooks. “The variety of subject matter should attract collectors of all genres. From landscapes to portraiture, from still lifes to animals, all subjects are included, and all styles.”

This is oil painter Scott Royston’s third year participating in the exhibition, and it’s his first year as a NOAPS Signature Artist. In his still life HE GOT GAME, says Royston, “I wanted to give tribute and homage to the great trompe l’oeil masters John Peto and William Harnett. The piece was done in the same vein as theirs, as they were my inspiration.”

Activities planned in connection with the exhibit kick off on August 31 and include workshops and a portrait-painting demonstration with NOAPS Master Artist Cheng Lian. “The annual NOAPS Best of America brings the chance to see some of the most talented artists of our time working in oil and acrylic, as well as upcoming talent,” says Brooks. “NOAPS has always opened the doors and been the first to recognize many talented artists who are not yet fully established.” —Kim Agricola
