Exposure: Focus on New Artists Albuquerque resident Tracy Rocca takes her digital camera into the field where everything from wildflowers to tree leaves inspire her to slow down and observe. She then takes these photos and translates them into paintings using layered glazes of pigments and walnut oil on polyester applied to panel. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Kit Reuther began her career as an architectural illustrator before moving to the fine arts. Her most recent body of work combines drawing in graphite and painting in a muted palette of oils. A resident of Santa Fe, Vanita Smithley is inspired by views from her studio, as well as from aerial perspectives. She applies multiple layers of paint to panel-supported canvas, then returns to the layers with a variety of tools to find 'loose forms'. |

Convergence: Mixed Media prints by Adabel Allen Allen's colorful mixed media prints are inspired by the fact that disparate disciplines such as science and religion often come to similar conclusions. While she physically layers intaglio and relief plates to echo the layers of meaning embedded in her work she uses bird imagery as a unifying element. A metaphor for the multiple perspectives we can use to observe the world, the birds in Allen's work also add a sense of humor to her otherwise rather thoughtful pieces. |

Earth Narratives: Paintings by Marilyn Dillard and Sculpture by Hariette Lawler Marilyn Dillard's work not only focuses on the visual qualities of rock and dirt, she buries her canvases for several months in the ground to stain them before she applies paint, collage and stitching to create her subtly hued abstract paintings. Hariette Lawler's sculptures are about the changing mental, spiritual, or emotional landscapes that we traverse on this earth. Her intricate pieces are often cut out of a single sheet of steel or copper. Between these two emerging artists the idea of 'land' is explored from the inside and the outside, and from its physical manifestations to the memories we retain of a specific place or journey. |

Il Lee: Ballpoint Drawings This extraordinary show is the inaugural collaboration between Gebert Contemporary and the highly-respected Arts Project International, New York. The show will consist of approximately 12 to 14 abstract ballpoint drawings on both paper and canvas. The canvases are painstakingly primed with several layers of mat gel which allow the warm ink to rest luxuriously on the surface and not sink into the fabric. Lee's ballpoint drawings on paper offer a deceptive intimacy for they have in the past reached a vastness of scale as much as 50 feet long. |

Tapestry: Mentor and Apprentices Show Tapestry artist Donna Loraine Contractor is pleased to announce that she and past and present apprentices will be showing the fruits of their teacher/student relationship at a show titled “Mentor and Apprentices. The exhibition of fine art tapestries from Contractor and four of her five apprentices will run from August 7-31, 2009 at the Arts Alliance Gallery, 1100 San Mateo Blvd. NE. An opening reception will be held Friday, August 7 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. “For the past 14 years, I’ve had a series of apprentices, says Contractor from her Albuquerque studio. “Some of them for a month, and some for as long as three years. Many of them came to me with no exposure to weaving, and others with backgrounds in knitting or other fiber arts. What they all had in common was a desire to immerse themselves in the world of a professional fine art weaving studio. The four apprentices in the exhibition vary widely in their ages, previous skill level, and direction their weaving has taken them since they came to the apprentice program. The show will showcase both technique and process, and is divided into sections that feature skill level pre, during and for two of the four students, post-apprentice time with Contractor. Apprentices trade three hours of their time for one hour of Contractor’s teaching. They are: • Hilary Heyl, whose three-year apprenticeship ended in 2006, will have six pieces in the show. A long-time folk art weaver, Heyl’s apprenticeship took her into the fine art tradition, where she has also incorporated many of the ancient mathematical concepts she learned from Contractor. • Vivian Skadron, who will have 4-6 pieces in the show, ended her one-year apprenticeship in December 2009. She learned to weave in Israel over 15 years ago, and came to Contractor desiring to learn the techniques of tapestry weaving. • Chyraelle Braddock, has participated in the apprenticeship since April of 2009. She’ll have between one and three pieces in the show. She is a long-time knitter and beader, who experimented with weaving before entering the program. Contractor’s inspiring and creative use of color drew her to the program. • Ruth Simpson joined the program in May 2009; she will have between one and three pieces in the show. Simpson was intrigued with the idea of an apprentice program, since this kind of learning is not often seen in the United States. Contractor’s program is unique among teacher/student arrangements, because rather than lecture her apprentices, she points students in the direction they are interested, then requires them to explore their own answers to the questions they find. “I see this program as a theoretical one, where progress comes in leaps instead of incrementally. My students ask themselves why they want to do something on the loom. I point them to resource materials, or show them techniques to achieve their goals. By the end of their program – which because it is self-directed, it ends when they want it to – they’ve learned design, finishing, the business end of running a professional weaving studio and whatever else they themselves think they need to learn. It is a social and interactive way to learn, which is not often seen in this country. And I learn as much from each apprentice as they learn from me, she says. About Donna Loraine Contractor The Albuquerque Art Business Association named award-winning tapestry and mixed media artist Donna Loraine Contractor a Local Treasure in 2008 for her contribution to the Duke City’s visual art scene. She has won over 30 art competitions and commissions such as a triptych for the City/County Building in Albuquerque and a large tapestry for the Bernalillo County Courthouse. Accolades include the display of her tapestries at the Albuquerque Museum, MFA at Santa Fe and an appearance on an HGTV special. In 2002 she created the Bravos Award for the Arts Alliance – a series of small weavings. Contractor’s work can be seen at four New Mexico galleries: Mariposa Gallery and the Albuquerque Museum Gallery Store in Albuquerque, the Tapestry Gallery in Madrid and the Weaving Southwest Gallery in Taos. Her work is shown and collected throughout the United States and abroad. |
