Thunderbox Road is a traveling exhibit of 12 Thunderboxes showcasing the artistic talents of 12 of the top artists in the Hill Country. The artists who were invited to participate: David Querbach, Pamela Gardner, Nancy McGalliard, Ken and Donna Malson, Thom Evans, Rex Hausmann, Dotti Brundrett, C.J. Latta, Ben Beckendorf, Betty Rhodes and Greg Glowka, Gwendolyn Listerman and Charles and Tami Kegley. The 12-piece exhibit premieres on October 4th in Boerne on the banks of the Cibolo Creek. From Boerne the exhibit moves to the Hill Country Arts Foundation in Ingram where it will be showcased for 3 weeks. It will travel the Hill Country through April of 2009; and on May 9, 2009, the Thunderboxes will be auctioned at the Museum of Western Art in Kerrville. Representatives from Hill Country Arts organizations will serve on the Judge's Panel, determining the $5,000 cash award for the Judge's Choice award. Ballots will be available while the Thunderboxes are on tour to determine the winner of the People's Choice Award, also a $5,000 cash award.

Art Show Expected to Attract 50,000 City declares a month-long celebration of art The popular Los Angeles Art Show unfolds at the Los Angeles Convention Center January 21-25. With a move from its previous venue, the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, to the downtown convention center, the show nearly doubles in size. This year about 200 museums and galleries are part of the annual event, including the Autry National Center, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Santa Monica Museum of Art, to name a few. Among the participating galleries are LewAllen Contemporary, Santa Fe, NM; Spencer Jon Helfen Fine Arts, Los Angeles, CA; Michele Mosko Fine Art, Denver, CO; and Redfern Gallery, Laguna Beach, CA. The impressive show is a collector’s treasure trove, featuring an extensive array of paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, and installations. Viewers can expect to see historical works as well as contemporary pieces. Meanwhile, the city of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs has passed a resolution declaring January to be Los Angeles Arts Month—an extended celebration of art with related films, lectures, and musical presentations held in conjunction with the art show. Organizers expect 50,000 visitors to attend the show.

Rendered in a style reminiscent of 1940s, LaDuke's narrative paintings play on dreams and memories to evoke a sense of nostalgia for simpler times. Polomis paints highly realistic still lifes, particularly of antique toys from the 1920s and '30s-works he calls "reactions to the present world of plastic and cellophane." The show goes up January 22 and remains on view through February 10.

Jan 24, 2009 Gallery/show reception Houston, TX 18 Hands Gallery 249B W. 19th St 713-869-3099 Add to My SWA	Throw-A-Thon In an unprecedented event, ceramic artist Albert Goldreich will attempt to break the world record for �continuous throwing on the potter�s wheel by one person� in a special Throw-a-Thon, benefiting Empty Bowls Houston, on Saturday, January 24th beginning at 3:00 p.m., at 18 Hands Gallery, 249B West 19th Street in the Heights. Empty Bowls is an international organization with a mission to end hunger. The Houston Chapter benefits the Houston Food Bank and is organized by area ceramists. No stranger to difficult tasks, the 70-year-old Goldriech has a history of rather unique philanthropic activities. In the summer of 2007, he walked across England to raise money for M. D. Anderson and other charities. Goldreich has arranged a special standing wheel for his heroic feat and plans on turning out some 300 bowls, all of which will be sold at Empty Bowls Houston this March. �It's hard to think about people going hungry,� says Goldreich. �I am so blessed that my family has never had to worry about hunger; I feel it's my time to give back.� He fully intends to break the current record of 17 hours as stated in the The Book of Alternative Records. �I am shooting for 24 hours,� boasts Goldreich, who is also hoping to bring more visibility to the ceramic arts through the event. �So many people have never seen a potter at work.� The artist plans to keep his strength up with health bars and a lot of coffee. He will be stationed by the window, where pedestrians can watch and engage him in the process. Goldreich has few fears about the project and feels it should be considerably easier than walking across England. �It's actually very relaxing to work at the wheel,� he says. �Once I get into a rhythm, all should go well.� 18 Hands Gallery artist Betsy Evans is excited about the event. �It's great to see Albert channeling his enormous energy into a project as fun as this, and for a great cause,� says Evans. �He's a risk taker with an especially warm heart.� For Evans, the project fits perfectly with the 18 Hands mission, which includes building awareness of the ceramic arts and contributing to the Greater Houston community. "Albert has set a big challenge for himself, and all of us in the ceramics community will be pulling for him. Albert�s commitment is very generous and illustrates what Empty Bowls is all about -- artists contributing their time and their talent to help those in need through the Houston Food Bank,� says Tom Perry, co-founder of Empty Bowls Houston. �With the economy spiraling downward right on the heels of Hurricane Ike�s devastation, the Houston Food Bank really needs benefits like Empty Bowls to feed those in the Greater Houston area who would otherwise go without food and good nutrition." Yates' childhood in the vibrant Utah landscape inspired a passion for color. His minimalist, sometimes moody scenes evoke a Hopperesque sensibility. "I've loved to paint ever since I was a young boy-the colors in the sky at sunset, a country home on a summer day or a stormy mountainside with its purple clouds," he says. Jackman, a ceramist, employs yoga breathing techniques while exerting the delicate yet strong pressure needed to pull the clay. "The natural world inspires me, so I was fascinated to discover crystalline glazes, in which a process normally occurring deep in the earth can be coaxed to take place in a kiln," she says. The two-person show runs January 26 through February 9.

Her styles range from classical to abstract. Her modes of expression are bas relief and in the round. Her mediums are clay, marble, plaster, and bronze. A comment frequently heard from viewers and collectors alike��Her work touches my heart.� Inspired by the subtle nuances of the human form, Aiko has used her studies of classical sculpture to inform her fluid expressions. Though her more abstracted and stylized work may have no visible link to the classical, the form is still there. There is a reception for the artist on Thursday, February 5, 5-8pm.

Although his images are quiet and soothing, this is an exciting show with a personal message and a unique approach to the monotype medium.

Organized by Phillips Director Laura Steward Heon, the show takes its inspiration from this phrase and features works that suffuse base, provocative content in otherworldly beauty. The artists whose works are included in this exhibition have, with exquisite care and cunning charm, made objects that glitter with unsettling appeal. In all of the works, an effervescent prettiness and sneering nastiness circle around each other, and both qualities are magnified by their combination. Instead the works were brought together for their peculiar aesthetic dialectic. For example, in the heart of the show, ceramic objects made by Kathy Butterly share space with Tanyth Berkeley�s photographs of an albino model named Grace and other improbably beautiful women.

This is only his fourth show as an artist and already he has work in corporate and private collections across the United States. Prior to becoming a fine artist, for thirty years he had been doing commissions for the rich and famous from New York City to Beverly Hills. A Master of Fine Arts (University of Washington), Battaglia has been creating whole walls and ceilings in trompe l'oeil. His clients included the former owners of Architectural Digest and the swanky Venetian hotel/resort/casino in Las Vegas. The "gracefully aged look" is Michael's specialty. He is inspired by a lifetime of passion for the ancient world, the play of light on European old world surfaces, and the once written and oral traditions lost from memory. There is a preview soiree with the artist in attendance on Saturday, February 21, 5-8 pm. RSVP required.

A Master of Fine Art from Claremont University, DeMoss has been exhibiting in California, Texas and Arizona for the past thirty years. His work can be considered both figurative and abstract with figurative elements. He often mixes silver with his bronze sculpture and mounts the pieces on granite stands. It is elegant work of great presence. DeMoss is often commissioned to do site specific sculpture for private and public areas and his work can be found in many corporate collections. He does a great amount of Liturgical work. His Tabernacle, Tabernacle Lamp and Dedication Candleholders for the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles got national publicity. His work echoes Egyptian and African influences and is about the timelessness of the past compared to the short-llived immediacy of the present. Villers' figures are not about the human figure, but rather the metaphysical. He achieves this ethereal, expressionless imagery by using a basic primitive principle--parallel axial construction. This elongated construction, absent contrapasto (or figurative twist), conveys an overwhelming sense of stillness and surreal stylization to create a dreamlike aura. Virgil's animals are raw and energized life encounters and primal desires that humans possess. The animal figures often act as guardians over the human figures. Spiritual communication is often evident between the ethereal God-like figure and the mortal animals. There is a reception for the artist on Thursday, April 2, 5-8pm.
