A LIGHT RAIN IN MONTALCINO
BY CRAIG NELSON |
Craig Nelson’s paintings evoke mood, emotion, and movement
CHARLESTON • A solo show of new works by Craig Nelson hangs at Ella Walton Richardson Fine Art this month. Nelson’s initial interest was in painting the figure, but he has since expanded to people involved in activities, landscapes, and urban scenes. “I am fascinated with motion, texture, lighting, mood, and form, figures involved in various environments as well as candid moments,” says the California artist. His paintings capture moments in time that might often be overlooked in everyday life. “If there is a message in my work, it would be for the viewer to take a moment to appreciate the unique beauty that the world has to offer,” says Nelson. First Impressions
NEW YORK • New works by Paul G. Oxborough are on view in a show at Eleanor Ettinger Gallery that begins May 8. Oxborough’s Impressionist-inspired works capture a certain quality of light as well as human emotion. “I paint the way I think people see—not with photographic accuracy, but with impressions. I think of myself as an impressionist—painting the impression of light hitting your eyes, the impression of color you see at a glance,” he has said. The show features figurative, landscape, and interior paintings. For more information: 212.925.7474 or www.eegallery.com.

LAUGH A LOT BY SUSAN LYON |
Down South
CHARLESTON • A solo show for Susan Lyon unfolds at Sylvan Gallery this month. “My style is realistic with as much impressionistic color as possible. I like to combine wide brushes for sweeping strokes in the background with small, soft brushes for subtle details in my center of interest,” says the North Carolina-based artist. She draws inspiration from her travels abroad as well as from painters such as Celia Beaux, one of the top portrait painters in America during the 1900s. Lyon is a member of the Palette and Chisel Club, Oil Painters of America, and the Northwest Rendezvous Group. The show opens with a reception on Friday, May 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. For more information: 843.722.2172 or www.thesylvangallery.com.
Of Note: Don’t miss Elizabeth Pruitt’s solo show at Highlands Art Gallery in Chester, NJ, beginning May 17.
