Governor’s show features William Sitting Bull
LOVELAND • Sixty of Colorado’s
finest painters and sculptors are featured in the annual Governor’s
Invitational Art Show & Sale, opening April 12 at the Loveland
Museum. First day festivities include a painting demonstration by
William Sitting Bull, great-great-grandson of famous Oglala Sioux Chief Sitting
Bull. The demonstration is free and open to the public. William Sitting Bull
lived on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota until the age of 12, when
he left to live with foster families — an experience that led to considerable
culture shock. He considers this early legacy the inspiration for his depictions
of Native Americans. Opening night features a catered gala reception with
most artists in attendance. Tickets to the gala cost $55 and include a color
catalog. The show features works by Gerald Balciar, Quang Ho, George Lundeen,
Rosetta, George Walbye, Bruce Gomez, and Kim English, and is on view daily
through May 18. For more information: 970.663.0919 or www.governorsartshow.org.
Masterpieces & More
DENVER • Masterpieces by Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, and Auguste Renoir are cast in a new light when viewed alongside those of Raphael, El Greco, and Velasquez in Inspiring Impressionism, an exhibit on view through the month at the Denver Art Museum. The presentation explores the influence of the European old masters on 19th-century Impressionism through more than 100 works assembled from numerous museum and private collections. The traveling exhibition includes portraits, still lifes, and landscapes by the old masters paired with Impressionist works that illuminate similarities in technique, composition, and subject. The groundbreaking show proves that, while the Impressionists were committed to capturing contemporary life, this commitment was built on a foundation anchored in knowledge of art history. A Death in the Art Family
Lynn Rowan Myers, who lived in Golden, CO, died in January from heart and lung problems. She was 74. Myers was known for her landscapes, which captured the colors of the southwestern terrain and skies. In a story about the artist that appeared in the Denver Post after her death, Myers’ daughter Cynthia Glenn noted that her mother never left the color red out of any of her paintings because she “saw her world in red.”
