SAN ANTONIO • More than 200 artists from across the country and around the globe participate in Salon International, a show of traditional, representational oil paintings hosted each spring by Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art. Showcasing both established and emerging artists, the juried event features approximately $25,000 in awards, including an $8,000 Best of Show prize. Painter George Hallmark is this year’s judge. “As we receive more and more entries each year, the bar of artistic excellence keeps rising,” says Jim Janes, co-owner of the gallery. Spring in the Air
ALBUQUERQUE • The Masterworks of New Mexico Spring Show celebrates its 10th anniversary at Expo New Mexico this month. The show features works from four separate juried shows—the Pastel Society of New Mexico, the New Mexico Watercolor Society, Miniature Arts Bardean, and the Rio Grande Art Association—which are hung together after judging. Scheduled events include an open house, artists’ paint-in, and artists’ demonstrations. The judge for larger works is Wilson Hurley, and the judge for the miniatures category is Jan Keefer. Phoenix native Ed Mell was awarded the title of Arizona Historymaker by the Historical League of the Arizona Historical Society at a gala ceremony in March. Mell was one of six honor-ees recognized for their contributions to preserving the state’s cultural and historic heritage. Both an oil painter and a bronze sculptor, Mell captures the spirit of the Southwest in a distinctive style that blends realism and abstraction with a layer of cubism.
