The 2011 annual Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale kicked off in Denver this week. The Red Carpet Reception held on Wednesday night featured paintings and sculptures by 61 top artists, mainly based in the West. On opening night Colorado’s Skip Whitcomb stood before his landscape painting, A Glimpse of Lake Gadsby, and beamed. An Artists’ Choice award hung alongside the painting. “He works so hard. He really deserves the award,” commented one of his fellow painters.
Meanwhile, other top honors went to Don Stinson, who took home the Best of Show award for his depiction of an outdoor movie screen surrounded by desolate terrain, and to Douglas Fryer, who received Southwest Art’s Award of Excellence for his body of work—three atmospheric landscapes pieces. The show continues at the National Western Expo Hall through January 23. –Bonnie Gangelhoff
