Throughout the 20th century, artists from the southern United States championed several influential fine-art movements, including folk art, southern expressionism, and modernism. Pop artist Jasper Johns, modernist Romare Bearden, and folk artist Clementine Hunter are just a few examples of the diverse talents who have called the region home. From Virginia to Texas and from Florida to Kentucky, the fine artists working throughout the region today create a wide range of artworks in varying styles and mediums, from realistic wildlife works and landscape paintings to abstracted portrayals of the figure. In the following pages, meet artists from the Southern U.S.
