California’s foothills, forests, mountains, and coastline have been recorded by numerous legendary artists, from Thomas Ayres’ renderings of Yosemite Valley and Albert Bierstadt’s portrayals of the Sierra Nevada to William Wendt’s depictions of San Juan Capistrano and the sand dunes of Monterey Bay. There’s no question that, today, the art of California remains a linchpin in American western art. In the following pages, we’ve rounded up a group of fine artists who call the Golden State home. Their works are as diverse as the California terrain itself. From traditional landscape paintings to wildlife depicted in scratchboard, there’s something here for every art lover.
