Nedra Matteucci

Distinction: Matteucci purchased her gallery from Forrest Fenn—a pioneer in western art—in 1988. The gallery has been open and specializing in historical American and Southwestern art at the same location since 1972.
What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in the art world during your career? Western art was not only established as significant in American art history, but it also inspired further awareness and understanding of the art that identified and grew in that spirit. The art colonies that were established across the Southwest are a testament to the artists living and working here today. It’s one reason why I love specializing in important historical work as well as representing the younger, talented artists who remain inspired for similar reasons. I love the continuity.
How have collectors’ tastes changed over the years? I see collectors who more and more are looking for quality, for substance, in a work of art.
How has Southwest Art magazine contributed to the careers of your artists? Southwest Art has helped provide art enthusiasts with an indirect connection to the art, its history, the artists, and the galleries representing them.
What accomplishment are you most proud of? I am proud that my gallery has always been a welcoming and accessible destination for the simple, pure enjoyment and appreciation of art by visitors of all ages and interests. I am proud to still be working with many artists who have been with me since I opened my first gallery. I feel the same about those of my staff who have been with me through the many years.
What’s the strangest story or funniest moment that’s happened in your gallery? Too many to tell! We love animals, keep the pond full, enjoy having guests (and yes, this includes colorful celebrities and politicians who shall remain nameless), my husband Richard loves to cook for a crowd, our friends are priceless, kids are always included, and laughter is part of any deal.
What do you hope to accomplish in the next 10 years? Seeing artists like Nicolai Fechin and Georgia O’Keeffe, who have transcended regional and national interest, leads me to hope for even greater potential for artists living and working here today.
