Distinction: Legacy Gallery represents some of the top artists in the West and has recently expanded beyond western art to include other genres as well.
When did your gallery open? October 1988.
What is the significance of the gallery’s name? To us, “Legacy” refers to clients purchasing paintings and then leaving them as a legacy to their family. More personally, Jinger’s family started the first gallery on Main Street in Scottsdale in the 1960s. We opened Legacy Gallery as second-generation art dealers, and now our daughter, Janell, works with us, representing a third generation—a family legacy.
What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in the art world during your career? The gallery business has changed drastically in the last 10 years. Internet access and the number of museum “for sale” shows have made it more difficult to maintain high-quality inventory.
What prompted you to create the new Scottsdale Salon show this year? Legacy Gallery’s roots are in traditional western art. We are in the process of evolving into a blend of figurative, still life, and landscapes, in addition to the western works. The Salon show is an international juried art show, with over 1,200 paintings submitted by more than 550 artists. The Salon gives us the opportunity to see works by artists from around the world, and some of them who have been juried into the Salon will also be invited to show with Legacy Gallery. Because of the downturn in the economy, we thought it was important to try something new, something that will expand our client base in the greater Phoenix area.
How has Southwest Art magazine contributed to the careers of your artists? The magazine’s articles have educated collectors about artists and trends along the way.
What accomplishment are you most proud of? We feel very blessed to be in our 23rd year of business. We enjoy having locations in both Jackson, WY, and Scottsdale, AZ. Seven years ago we started the Scottsdale Art Auction with two other partners and we have been extremely pleased with its success.
What do you hope to accomplish in the next 10 years? To continue to offer our clients the best art we possibly can in our galleries and auction.
