A.C. Lindner is a self-described “purist” when it comes to the creation of her evocative still-life paintings. For example, Lindner grinds her own pigments and cooks the mediums in the tradition of the old masters. She begins anew each day devoting about 45 minutes to formulating her oil-based brews. “I like working with fresh paints. And I enjoy the whole process as well as the resulting buttery paintings that are luminous and saturated in color,” she explains.
Lindner insists on working from life in order to observe the subtle nuances of color and light that only the eye can perceive. At the recent Oil Painters of America show held in May in Fredericksburg, TX, her attention to detail and the traditions of the Dutch masters paid off handsomely when she won an award of excellence for her still life rose medallion tea basket. Judge Quang Ho praised the piece as being “one of the most sensitive paintings in the exhibit.”
A deep appreciation of the beauty in everyday life has led Lindner to focus her artistic eye on the still-life genre. “I am a slow painter and I like having more time with the subjects without the light changing,” she says. Lindner is represented by Roughton Galleries, Dallas, TX, and www.aclindner.com.

Scott Lloyd Anderson
Minnesota painter Scott Lloyd Anderson doesn’t have to venture far from his studio in south Minneapolis to find enticing scenery. Snow-covered streets, frozen lakes, and atmospheric alleys beckon at every turn. But, according to Anderson, he is just as likely to find beauty wherever he goes, including the countryside and city parks. Nature never fails to reward and challenge him with its constantly changing colors, light, and atmosphere. “I love being outside and in nature,” he says, explaining that he is undaunted by zero-degree climes, wind, and bugs. While he relishes painting on location, Anderson also completes some of his works in his studio.
Anderson’s paintings emphasize accurate draftsmanship learned in his years as an art director for an array of magazines. But he is also concerned with capturing the abstract elements he sees in nature. “I use the language of the landscape to express abstract notions about color, form, design—and simply for the pleasing texture of paint on canvas.”
Anderson studied for five years with Minnesota-based painter Joseph Paquet. His work is on view in October at the San Luis Obispo Plein Air Painting Festival, where he won Best of Show last year. He is represented by Telluride Gallery of Fine Art, Telluride, CO; Wilcock Gallery, Excelsior, MN; Esteban Gallery, Santa Fe, NM; and www.scottlloydanderson.com.

Scott Freeman
After spending 10 years working as an illustrator and designer for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, MO, Scott Freeman became a victim of corporate downsizing. That’s when he decided to take a risk and become a full-time fine artist. In 2001, Freeman, his wife, Mollie, and their five children moved to Loveland, CO. “I don’t think I would have had the courage to pack up my family and leave if that hadn’t happened,” Freeman says.
Today, he feels more than blessed at the fateful turn of events. Although he paints figurative and still-life works, these days he is drawn to landscape painting. “I like the orchestration of color and form as well as the experimentation that can go with landscapes. You have a lot of freedom and you don’t have to be concerned with getting the likeness or the eyes of a person in the right place,” he says.
Freeman says whether he is portraying people, things, or places, he is always trying to come up with imagery that excites him. “My hope is that other people will be excited by the images too,” he says.
This month Freeman’s work is on view at the Estes Park Plein Air painting competition in Estes Park, CO, where he won Best of Show last year. He is represented by Gallery East, Loveland, CO; Paint Horse Gallery, Breckenridge, CO; Grimshaw Fine Art, Taos, NM; and Basalt Gallery, Basalt, CO.
