A New Perspective
OKLAHOMA CITY
• Whimsical, imaginative animal paintings and drawings by Timothy Chapman are on display throughout the month at JRB Art Gallery. His subjects of choice are animals of all shapes and sizes, including giraffes, zebras, elephants, and even rhinoceroses. “I like to weave half-truths into my paintings,” Chapman once told Southwest Art. The Arizona artist puts his own spin on natural history by adding bright colors and stenciled patterns to his subjects and placing them in unique positions, often floating mid-air, eating exotic fruits, or holding uncharacteristic objects. An opening reception is held on Friday, May 1, from 6 to 10 p.m. For more information: 405.528.6336 or www.jrbartgallery.com.

Springtime Flowers
Color and passion motivate artist Shirley Novak
CHARLESTON
• Throughout the month a solo show of new paintings by Shirley Novak hangs at Sylvan Gallery. Novak’s subject of choice is flowers. “Intense and delicate color harmony has always moved me emotionally. My love of flowers and love of color are the passions that drove me to become a painter,” she has said. She has studied with Len Chmiel and attended the Art Students League of Denver, where she took classes with Mark Daily. Novak enjoys reading about Claude Monet’s passion for his garden and even finds time to harvest her own poppy seeds. Meet the artist at an opening reception on Friday, May 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. For more information: 843.722.2172 or www.thesylvangallery.com.

All in the Family
CHESTER
• A two-woman show featuring Susan Blackwood and Barbara Applegate opens May 16 at Highlands Art Gallery. Applegate, a self-taught artist currently residing in Maine, paints interiors, still lifes, landscapes, and garden scenes with bright colors in watercolor and oil. She comes from a family of artists, and grew up surrounded by paper, pencils, charcoal, and brushes.
Blackwood also grew up in a family of artists. The subject matter varies in her paintings, but one consistent quality in all of her works is the contrast of light and shadow. “My inspiration comes from my environment,” she has said. She often travels overseas to paint with her husband, artist Howard Friedland. Watch the artists paint informally at an opening reception held on Saturday, May 16, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the gallery; the show is on display until June 14.
